Teacher License Renewal Guide

Question 1

How many professional development hours do I need to renew my teaching license?

Accepted Answer

PD hour requirements vary by state. Most states require between 60 and 180 hours per renewal cycle, which typically runs 3–5 years. For example, Virginia requires 180 hours over 5 years, Texas requires 150 CPE hours over 5 years, and Wyoming requires 90 hours over 5 years. YourClassMentor™ provides state-specific renewal requirements for all 50 states and Washington DC — visit the State PD Requirements page and select your state to see the exact requirements where you teach.

Question 2

What counts as approved professional development for teacher license renewal?

Accepted Answer

Approved professional development typically includes coursework, workshops, conferences, instructional coaching, and structured online learning that is aligned to state educator standards or approved by your state education agency or employing school district. Requirements vary by state — some states require PD to be pre-approved by the state education agency, while others allow district-approved PD. YourClassMentor™ Professional Learning modules are structured, evidence-based, and aligned to state educator frameworks, making them appropriate for inclusion in your professional development documentation. Always verify current requirements with your state education agency.

Question 3

How does MTC Teach™ help with teacher license renewal documentation?

Accepted Answer

YourClassMentor™ tracks your completed Professional Learning modules, generates verified contact hours, and produces a professional transcript you can use for license renewal documentation. Each completed module includes a certificate of completion showing the module title, contact hours earned, completion date, and your name. Your professional transcript aggregates all completed modules and contact hours in one place, making it easy to document your PD for renewal.

Question 4

What is a state educator framework and why does it matter for professional development?

Accepted Answer

A state educator framework (also called a teacher evaluation framework) defines the standards and domains of effective teaching practice recognized by your state. Examples include the Danielson Framework for Teaching (used in many states), the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS), the Virginia Teacher Performance Evaluation System (VTPES), and DC's IMPACT system. Professional development aligned to your state's educator framework is more likely to be recognized as high-quality PD by your state education agency and your school district. YourClassMentor™ maps all Professional Learning modules to the educator frameworks of all 50 states and Washington DC.

Question 5

Can I use MTC Teach™ Professional Learning for license renewal in my state?

Accepted Answer

YourClassMentor™ Professional Learning modules are structured, evidence-based, and aligned to state educator frameworks. They are designed to meet the characteristics of high-quality professional development recognized by state education agencies. However, whether specific PD counts toward license renewal is ultimately determined by your state education agency and your employing school district. We recommend verifying current requirements with your state education agency before using any PD for renewal documentation. YourClassMentor™ provides verified contact hours and certificates to support your documentation.

Question 6

How long is a typical teacher license renewal cycle?

Accepted Answer

Most states use a 5-year renewal cycle for professional teaching licenses. Some states use shorter cycles — for example, Vermont uses a 7-year cycle, while some states use 3-year cycles for provisional or initial licenses. The renewal cycle and required PD hours are set by your state education agency. YourClassMentor™ displays the renewal cycle and required hours for every state on the State PD Requirements pages.

Question 7

What is the difference between contact hours and credit hours for teacher PD?

Accepted Answer

Contact hours (also called clock hours) measure the actual time spent in professional development — one contact hour equals one hour of PD. Credit hours are an academic unit typically used for college coursework, where one credit hour usually represents about 15 hours of instruction. Most state license renewal requirements are expressed in contact hours or clock hours. YourClassMentor™ awards verified contact hours for completed Professional Learning modules.

Question 8

Does MTC Teach™ offer PD aligned to the Danielson Framework for Teaching?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many states use the Danielson Framework for Teaching (or a Danielson-aligned framework) as their state educator evaluation system. YourClassMentor™ maps all Professional Learning modules to the Danielson Framework domains — Planning and Preparation, Classroom Environment, Instruction, and Professional Responsibilities — as well as to the specific educator frameworks of all 50 states and Washington DC. When you select your state in MTC Teach™, you see how each module aligns to the framework used in your state.

Question 9

How do I find the PD requirements for my state?

Accepted Answer

YourClassMentor™ maintains a State PD Requirements database covering all 50 states and Washington DC. Each state page shows the renewal cycle, required contact hours, framework name, and links to the official state education agency. Visit yourclassmentor.com/pd and select your state to see the current requirements. Always verify requirements directly with your state education agency, as requirements can change.

Question 10

What is instructional coaching and how does it support professional development?

Accepted Answer

Instructional coaching is a form of job-embedded professional development in which an educator receives individualized, evidence-based feedback on their teaching practice. Unlike traditional PD workshops, instructional coaching is connected to actual classroom evidence and focused on specific growth goals. YourClassMentor™ provides private instructional coaching through AI-powered session analysis — you upload a classroom recording, and YourClassMentor™ delivers a coaching report with timestamped observations mapped to your state's educator framework. This evidence-based coaching supports the kind of reflective practice that state educator frameworks recognize as professional growth.
